HAWAIIAN MUSIC: PUBLISHED SONGBOOKS compiled by Amy K. Stillman December 1988 Introduction This index is primarily an aid to locate Hawaiian songs in published Hawaiian songbooks. A Hawaiian song is defined here as a song in Hawaiian on any subject, or a song in English with Hawaiʻi or some aspect of Hawaiian culture as a theme. A Hawaiian songbook is one in which a majority of the contents are Hawaiian songs. The songbooks indexed are published songbooks as well as informal compilations that have been cataloged into library collections. This index is organized into these parts: List of Songbooks Indexed Hawaiian songbooks fall into three major types: 1. those that are primarily collections of Hawaiian songs 2. instruction books for ʻukulele and guitar 3. children's books Of these three types, this index focuses on the first type. Lists of the second and third types have been compiled, but the books on those lists do not appear in this index. Searchable Index The index's search function queries the songs' titles and first lines. Notes to keep in mind: Some non-Hawaiian songs were published in the songbooks and were not deleted from this index's entries. Songs appearing with different titles (e.g. "Pupu Ao Ewa," "Pupu O Ewa," and "Pearly Shells") have not been cross-referenced. The index includes errors and omissions. Corrections are welcome. Please e-mail them to speccoll@hawaii.edu. Note on Hawaiian language and diacritical marks Because of technical limitations at the time this index was created, the spelling of Hawaiian language titles and first lines had to be standardized in order to be properly sorted by computer. For this reason diacritical marks are not used in the index entries, and spellings may not reflect their appearance in the original source.
